Dhankar village is situated on a hill which was once the capital of Spiti Valley of Himachal Pradesh, India. Dhankar means a fort built on a rock. Its altitude is 3894 meters above sea level. A monastery is located here Dhankar Gompas which is situated on top of this village.

The view of the Spiti river and the tall conical mountains make this village even more scenic. This is a small village which is about 37 kms from Kaza. It has been the capital of Spiti for many years.

It is situated on a ridge which was meant to defend against attack. Dhankar village is also famous for Spiti Wildlife today. Dhankar Lake is another scenic spot on the trek of about 5 hours from Dhankar Village, so whenever you visit Dhankar village, don’t forget to visit Dhankar Lake. It offers a panoramic view of the sky touching mountains, Spiti river, and all around.
